Summer Day began to be celebrated massively throughout Albania, but its roots are located in the town of Elbasan, in the centre of Albania. Not only the roots, but and all the traditions, dishes and manner of celebration, are the exclusiveness of this area. Elbasan is credited with keeping alive for centuries.
And at the time of the dictatorship, where this holiday almost died in Albania, it was celebrated as the largest holiday of the year, every March 14th. The festivities began with the establishment of summer in hand, mainly with symbolic colors of spring, red, and white as the housewives prepared the Ballokums.
Summer Day Legend
Veera's day is in one of Elbasan's oldest traditions. The origin of the festival is marked by traces at the temple of the Zana of the mountain built near the Shkumbin River in Elbasan. Zana was the god of hunting, forests, and nature, and it appeared only on March 14, which marked the beginning of Wine, only two seasons, winter, and summer were known at that time.
This legend was passed on from generation to generation, and the Summer Day festival is known for its unique cultural tradition and values. The symbol of this party is the ballacum. For this special day each family has its own recipe preserved over the years. Previously celebrated in Elbasan, it has now become a national holiday. /Periscopi
