From the Serbian capital, he told reporters that the Association of Serb majority municipalities is a “significant step” in relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
As Danas reports, Escobar has said that from Saturday's meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq is not expected to sign, but an agreement is required on how to move forward is conveyed by the Express newspaper.
The European proposal Escobar said it represents “one of the best opportunities in the region” to move forward.
He called on the parties to be very serious “” in search of the agreement, to be flexible, constructive, and to have vision to take advantage of this opportunity he said was given.
Escobar said he wants an agreement to be reached this year for normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia, and believes this is possible.
The American “position is that Kosovo is a country of territorial integrity and sovereignty. We believe the region will benefit from mutual recognition. As far as UN membership is concerned, we think the value of the agreement would be the fastest integration of Serbia and Kosovo and of the entire region”, Escobar has said.
“As for Kosovo's membership in the UN, I think it would bring faster integration into the EU not only of Kosovo and Serbia, but also of the entire region. We are aiming for processes that will bring the entire region closer to Europe”, he has added.
