Elon Musk and an AI expert group and industry leaders are calling for a six-month pause in the development of all stronger systems than the newly issued GPT-4 of OpenAI in an open letter citing potential risks to society and humanity.
The letter, which was published by the non-profit Institute of Life and signed by more than 1,000 people, including Elon Musk, calls for a pause in the development of advanced artificial intelligence until they are developed, implemented and tested by independent experts.
The paper details possible risks to society and culture from the AI systems and calls on developers to work with policymakers and government regulators.
It is noted that the institute that issued the letter, the Futurary Institute of Life, is funded mainly by the Elon Musk foundation.
Concern is intensifying after Europol on Monday raised concerns for advanced artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT, warning of possible abuse of the system in efforts to hyshing, dezination and cybercrime.
