Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted to thinking of retirement from Portugal's Nationale, after a 2022 failed Cup Worlde spending most of its time on the bench.
Five times the winner of the Golden Ball was highly criticised for his appearance in Qatar, after ending up as substitute for the quarterfinal match against Morocco, when Portugal suffered the shocking defeat and was eliminated.
This was when Ronaldo thought about ending his career with the national team, with which he wrote his 118 goals in 196 presentations.
Ronaldo said Thursday at a media conference before the match against Liechtenstein: “I won't lie. In life we must put everything on the scales. We thought and reflected with my family and concluded that no matter what difficulties we may not give up. I've looked at situations from different perspectives and learned a lot from it. ”
I'm happy to come back. Roberto Martinez said he still believes in me. I always wanted to play. As you know, he talked to everyone and me too. I had the opportunity to realize that I have much to give the nationals. I feel it and love it, and my desire is to take Portugal to the highest level. I will always make my contribution when I'm necessary”, he added.
Portugal's manager Martinez has confirmed that Ronaldo will be captain of the team.
There are many different and normal players that the system will change, but it is not mine to speak. Changes are good in life. What we feel in nationals is very positive. The energy is very good and warm, it's different. I'm sure we're prepared for whatever comes. I'm sure Portugal will be a team with more attacks. ”
Portugal Liechtenstein match will be played today by 20:45 within Euro2024 qualifications.
