The 16th meeting of the Council for Stabilisation and Association between the EU and Northern Macedonia, which is chaired by Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski, was held in Skopje. EU Foreign and Security Affairs High Representative and European Commission Deputy Chairman Joseph Borell, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Economic Policy Oliver Varhii, and representatives of European Union member states and European institutions participated in the meeting. Meetings of this council so far have been held in Brussels, and this is the first time such a meeting is held in Skopje. Northern Macedonia values this as a historical dimension. The meeting discussed reform status, progress in European integrations, and bilateral relations under the Stabilisation and Association Agreement.
Borell: Making the Effort for a Common Future
Borell also viewed the fact that the council meeting is being held for the first time outside Brussels as a message that EU legislation is approaching Skopje. We concluded that the RMV is working successfully for the crime process. The message that emerged from this meeting is clear, the future of northern Macedonia and its citizens is in the EU.
Borell also commented on constitutional changes and was said Macedonia in this case will not lose anything, except that it will draw closer to the EU.
“RMV assumed the obligation to change its constitution and include citizens living on state borders and who are part of other nationalities, such as Bulgarians. There's nothing strange here. If we take Croatia's constitution, we will see that it has 22 different ethnic communities. I think your country is setting a good example of a multiethnic society, so constitutional changes will only advance fundamental rights. You don't risk your identity, your identity will be protected”, Joseph Borell said.
Borelli also held meetings with RMV President Stevo Pendarovski, Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferri and Defence Minister Slavjanka Petrovska.
After staying in Skopje, Borelli will stay in Ohrid tomorrow, where the new round of dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade will be held with EU mediation, dedicated to normalising bilateral relations.
