Why are there so many victims after the earthquake in Turkey

More than 2,300 people have died and thousands more have been hurt after the powerful earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey, near the border with Syria, in the early hours of Monday. The quake that struck the Gazintep region was followed by another quake, which was almost the same size, writes BBC, records Periscope.

It was a powerful earthquake. The one who hit Gazintrep was estimated to be 7.8 on the Richter scale, rated “the largest “” on the official scale of the magnitude. The centre was about 60 miles [18 km] inland, causing major damage to buildings on the surface.

Professor Joanna Faure Walker, chief of the Institute for Risks and Reduction of Harms at College University in London, said: <x0... earthquakes with the most casualties, only two over the last 10 years have been on the same scale, and four over the last 10x1 years.

But it is not just the power of the quake that caused so much damage.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, at a time when people were inside sleeping.

The sustainability of buildings is also a factor.

Dr. Carmen Solana, an expert on volcanoes and communication during danger at Portsmouth University, said: “Resistanceal infrastructure is unfortunately rare in southern Turkey and especially in Syria, so saving lives now depends largely on the answer. The next 24 hours are key to finding survivors. After 48 hours, the number of survivors decreases dramatically”.

The area where the quake occurred is an area that has had no earthquakes for more than 200 years, so the level of preparation is less than in a region that has learned to experience such quakes.

Why is Turkey one of the most active areas in the world in terms of earthquakes?

Lying on several tectonic plates, Turkey is a bit of an active area in the world in terms of earthquakes, the BBC writes.

Most of the country is located on the tectonic plaque of Anadol, which extends between the two large tiles -- that of Eurasia and Africa -- and a small, Arab one. As these two large plates move, Turkey squeezes, experts claim.

That means earthquakes and quakes are common in Turkey. The State Authority for Disaster Management and Emergency Management (AFAD) recorded more than 22 thousand earthquakes in 2022, while many have human consequences, Periscope follows.

The most murdered quake had occurred in 1999 in Izmit, where more than 17 thousand people had died after the 7.6 magnitude quake./Periscopi/
