Defence officials said they were convinced that the “monitoring volume at high altitude” belonged to China. Last seen over the western state of Montana.
But the military leaders decided not to bring it down, as there were concerns about the risk of falling waste.
China hasn't commented yet.
Canada said Friday it was monitoring “a possible second” incident involving a monitoring balloon, but did not say which country could stay behind it. Also in the statement, it is said to be working closely with the US to protect Canada's sensitive information from foreign intelligence threats”.
The target flew over Alaska's Aleuthian Islands and via Canada before it appeared over the town of Billings in Montana on Wednesday, officials said there.
A senior defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the government prepared fighter planes, including F-22, in the event the White House ordered the object to collapse.
