“The chairmanship for peace” was organised in part by Sahra Wagenknecht, a member of the German leftist party “Die Linke” and comes a day after the anniversary of a year of Ukraine's Russian invasion, which drew promises of more weapons from Western allies.
Protest organisers said on their website: “we call on the German Chancellor to stop the escalation of arms shipments now. Every lost day costs up to 1,000 lives more and draws us closer to a Third World War”.
Germany, along with the United States, has been one of Ukraine's largest arms suppliers.
