In his report, this institute has said it is possible that the death toll could be between 1,000 and 10,000.
The Institute estimated that the chances of between 100 and 1,000 killed are 27%, while 20% are the odds that the number could be 10,000 and 100,000.
A total of 640 people have died in both countries affected so far, according to the Associated Press.
Thousands more have been hurt and the search team are continuing to search for survivors.
The American institute's measurements are based on earthquake impact estimates, comparing the population endangered by the intensity of such an earthquake, with fatal losses based on previous earthquakes that have hit that area. /Periscopi/
