“I am obliged to announce that Russia is suspending participation in the treaty for strategic weapons”, he said, following dozens of allegations against the West, which he accused of fighting in Ukraine and “aggression”.
In a 45-minute speech to the deputies of the Russian people, Putin has accused the US and NATO of failing to co-operate.
He has said Russia will conduct new nuclear tests if the US does the same.
The treaty was signed in 2002.
