Kosovo has joined Western states by condemning and imposing sanctions on Russia due to its neighbour's unprotested invasion. / REL One in Pristina on February 23rd, Ukraine's national flags were placed on the main squares. February 2nd 24th marks the first anniversary of the launch of Ukraine's unprotested Russian occupation. 3 Kosovo has joined the United States and the European Union in condemning aggression and imposing sanctions on Russia. 4 In addition to imposing sanctions, Kosovo has sheltered several Ukrainian journalists and has expressed readiness to accept Ukrainian refugees. 5 of the Western Balkan region's states, only Serbia has enjoyed close reports with Moscow has not imposed sanctions on Russia despite continued EU and US calls. 6Russia, as an ally of Serbia, does not recognise Kosovo's independence, and Pristina has consistently voiced fears that Moscow will try to destabilise the Western Balkans and spur tensions between Kosovo and Serbia. Although Kosovo, like many countries of the world, has expressed solidarity with Ukraine, the latter does not recognise Kosovo's independence. 11 It is believed that tens of thousands have been killed in the war in Ukraine. The United Nations said earlier in February that it has confirmed over 8,000 casualties among civilians, adding that the actual number may be much higher. 12 As a result of fierce fighting and persistent Russian attacks, Ukraine has suffered major material damage.
