After the crash, authorities will remove its remnant from American territorial waters. The balloon was spotted on Thursday, flying at an altitude of 18 miles [18 km], and it was estimated to be three school buses.
TV footage showed a slight explosion, and then the balloon was seen falling free toward the water. Similarly, U.S. military aircraft were spotted as flying in the vicinity, as were ships ready for surgery to extract balloons from Atlantic Ocean.
Plans for the collapse of the balloon over the ocean were announced earlier by two American officials who spoke on condition of anonymity on this significant operation.
In preparation for the operation, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily closed airspace over the North and South Carolina coastline, including airports in Charleston and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina. The Coast Guard also advised floating vehicles to leave the area immediately.
Before its collapse, President Joe Biden said the United States “would resolve the case” of the Chinese balloon.
The authorities have kept the Chinese balloon viscous under constant monitoring. On Friday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that another Chinese balloon was spotted flying over Latin America.
The Pentagon confirmed reports that a second Chinese balloon was flying over Latin America.
“We think it's another Chinese balloon, which is being used for surveillance”, Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, said in a statement.
The American authorities considered the incident with the balloon on American territory a serious event in open violation of American airspace and international law. But China has insisted that the balloon, which according to Beijing had lost control, was civilian and that it was used for data collection.
The balloon incident forced US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to postpone the scheduled visit to Beijing this weekend.
We concluded that there are currently no suitable conditions for a constructive visit”, Mr. Blinken said. /voa
