The iPhone, released in 2007, features a 3.5-inch screen and a 2 megapixel camera. If it reaches its appreciation, it will be sold for more than 80 times the original price of $599.
The phone was auctioned by her American owner Karen Green, who received it as a gift from friends.
Because the phone didn't work on the network provider she used, Green just left it on a shelf, unused.
She realized she was sitting in a potential gold mine when she saw that an original iPhone, unopened, had been sold for $10,000.
Green says auction revenues will be used to help with the costs of managing its cosmetic tattoos studio in New Jersey.
The auction, headed by LCG Auctions, began last night and closed 19 February.
Green said: “thought to myself: God, I think I have the original. I called my son and said: Go get the phone and make sure it doesn't open”.
Last October, an iPhone of the first generation was auctioned for nearly 40,000 dollars, writes the DailyMail.
She added: “If I could keep the phone for another 10 years, maybe I would. The only reason I'm selling that phone is because I have to support this business”
The offer will begin at $2,500, but the phone is estimated to reach $50,000 or more, given the sale price at the October auction and its wide media coverage.
