The number of victims is believed to be 360, while health officials in the Syrian capital, Damascus, have reported that 237 people have died in areas controlled by the Syrian government.
Hundreds of others reportedly have been injured in both countries.
Turkey is situated on one of the largest seismic lines and is often hit by earthquakes.
Monday's earthquake episode was about 20 miles [26 km] from the city of Nurdag and about 33 km from the city of Gaziantep, the American Geological Service said.
There have also been subsequent earthquakes, including one on a scale of 6.7.
