Although it is one of the states that has a small population, Albanian citizens are gaining a significant weight in European Union countries.
According to a recent INSTAT report, Albanians rank ninth in Europe on the list of non-EU citizens living in one of the European Union's states, with about 2.4% of the total of non-EU foreigners living in one of the EU countries.
According to Eurostat, in early 2021, 23.7 million people living in the EU were not citizens of a member state. That was equal to 5.3% of the EU population. 31 citizenships outside the EU had at least 1.0% of all non-resident citizens- The EU, which lived in the EU, as well as the known non-states.
These together constituted 76.7% of all non--retire citizens. EU living in the EU. The largest communities were Moroccan (8.7% of all people living in the EU who were not citizens of an EU member state), Turks (8.5%) and Syrians (5,2%).
Following the Syrians was China, with around 4.2%, the United Kingdom with about 4%, Ukraine, with about 3.9%, Russia, with 3.5%, Algeria at about 3% and then Albania.
All states that rank over Albania have a current population far higher than ours: Morocco (37 mln); Turkey (85 mln); Syria (21 mln); China (1.4 mld); United Kingdom (67.3 mln); Russia (143 mln); Algeria (44 mln).
While Albania's population is estimated at around 2.8 million people currently, it will be the new Censi, which is expected to take place in September, which will shed light on the real size of the population still remaining in the country.
For the weight of the population living in the EU, Albanians are likened to the Indians who come after us, instead of the ten (India has 1.4 billion people).
According to other Eurostat statistics, in 2021, there were about 570 thousand Albanian citizens in the EU. Italy carries the main weight of about 433 thousand people. In Germany, the number of Albanian citizens has increased significantly in recent years, reaching 77 thousand people and in France to 33 thousand.
Eurostat does not report the data for Greece, where Albanian citizens are at comparable levels with Italy. Adding to Greece, the Albanian population living in EU countries accounts for about 1 million, or 4.2% of the total of citizens who are not of EU origin, but live in one of the Europoan Union states. This would rank Albania fourth of all countries in the world, after Morocco, Turkey, Syria and China (Monitor footnote).
Migration is an unstoppable phenomenon that occurs in all parts of the world. But the following size in Albania is too high, for the country's size, which is shown by the fact that Albanians are in similar numbers in the EU with countries with populations exceeding 1 billion people.
In recent years the high rates of migration, especially young people, are significantly affecting the labour market, consumption, and in the longer term the consequences will be greater in economic productivity and pension scheme. /Monitor. al
