But there is one problem: Russian President Vladimir Putin holds the same medal.
French President Emmanuel Macron captured the Medal of the Grand Cross of Honour around Zelensky's chest, after both met at the French presidential palace Thursday, a move Macron said aimed at showing France's “recognition of Ukraine's bravery since Russia invaded it nearly a year ago.
Zelensky, his second foreign delivery since the Russian invasion, met on February 8th in Paris with Macronin and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Some French lawmakers and activists have called on Macron to replay the honour that has been done to Putin with the same medal because of the war.
Macron did not rule out the possibility of lifting the honor Putin granted by then-President Jacques Chirac in 2006.
Macron told reporters Friday that such a decision “has serious meaning and should be taken at the right moment”.
He noted that he has cancelled the honours even in the past.
Macro lost his high gratitude to Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein after charges of sexual abuse against him in 2017.
Chiclist and the former star of Tour de France, Lance Armstrong, were also deprived of such gratitude. / REL
