Syrian officials have reported that hundreds have been killed in the country destroyed by civil war, both in areas under Damascus and in the opposition-controlled northwest.

Israel and Syria have been in a state of war for decades, with periods of ceasefire. For a time, Israel helped the Syrian rebels at the border of the Golan Heights.
