Following a meeting of Greek Environment Minister Costas Skrekas with Albanian Minister Mirela Godbarko in Athens has been announced to establish an inter-field committee to work in this direction.
The International Union's Regional Office for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced last October preparation on the Greek side of 4 studies on the best protection of the waterwater basin of the “Vyosa” and promotion of cross-border co-operation for a Greece-Albanian cross-border park.
The Albanian government, in turn, has recently committed itself to announce within this year the flow of the Vjosa River with its branches on Albanian territory, a National Park.
Both on the Greek and Albanian side, environmental organisations' concerns have been particularly linked to projects to divert the flow of the river “Vyosa” and plant construction projects.
The “Vyosa” river has a length of about 272km, of which 80km on Greek territory and about 192km within Albanian territory, and is considered Europe's last wild “ ” due to its failure to build hydric works in the river.
