From the Kosovo government said that prior to the start of the formal meeting with EU High Representative Borrell, Kurti held a meeting with US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs and simultaneously the special envoy of the United States for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar.
The prime minister thanked Escobar for the support and engagement of the United States of America in the dialogue process.
During the day, after the bilateral meeting with High Representative Borrell, and EU emissary Miroslav Lajcak, the trilate meeting was held.
“Prime Minister Kurti expressed readiness for the signing of the Base Agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, as proposed by the European Union and supported by Germany, France, Italy and the United States of America. However, the Serb side rejected the signing. At the trilate meeting, it was agreed that the EU proposal text will remain unchanged, even though Serbia has not yet shown itself ready to sign. The parties will begin talks on the implementation plan. This plan should contain concrete details and be comprehensive, to provide effectiveness in action and to be balanced”, reported in the media report.
The agreement reached last night was also said to be among the parties that recognise each other as equal, and has been reached on the basis of respect for sovereign equality of states, respect for their independence, autonomy and territorial integrity. The agreement, among other things, ensures mutual recognition of the state documents and symbols between Kosovo and Serbia, the deployment of permanent missions, as well as guarantees that neither side represents or acts on behalf of the other in the international sphere. With this agreement, Serbia is also obliged not to undermine or reject the membership of the Republic of Kosovo in any international organisation.
The full text of the agreement is fully published on the EU Foreign Service official Web site. Next political summit expected to be held during March
