A night ago Hans Modrow left us at the age of 95. Our party lost an important personality”, said in the party's announcement, as heir to the German Communist Party.
Modrow has said it will help turn East Germany into democracy, when he became prime minister for the communist transitional government on November 13th 1989 -- four days after the Berlin Wall opened that split the East and West of Berlin for 28 years, writes Al-Jazeera, traces Klankosova.tv.
He announced the first free elections ever known as the German Democratic Republic in March 1990, in which he stopped being prime minister.
Even though it brought about reforms, he was charged by opponents who tried to delay the political change and union that took place in October 1990. He was criticised for trying to remake rather than break up security police.
Modrow was convicted in 1993 of electoral fraud in municipal elections in May 1989, but was not imprisoned and said the charges were politically motivated.
He continued to serve in the German Parliament from 1990 to 1994, representing Die Linke's director and being a European Parliament MP from 1999 to 2004.
