US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said there have been productive “differences with Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, in Munich, Germany, where a security conference is being held.
“We talked about the importance of normalising [Serbia's] relations with Kosovo and of how much we appreciate Serbia's continued support for Ukraine”, Blinken wrote on Twitter.
“We share Serbia's desire for a future with the European Union”, he added.
Had a productive transition with Serbian President @AVuccic Today at the first @MunSecConf. We discussed the importation of normalised relations with Kosovo and I accepted our application for Serbia's continued support for Ukraine. We share Serbia's desire for a introduction with the EU. Vuciq, who is participating in the Munich Security Conference, wrote in his account at the Instagram that at the meeting with Blinken, except that relations between Belgrade and Pristina were discussed, “improved relations” between their countries was confirmed.
Kosovo and Serbia are under pressure from the international community to reach an agreement on normalising relations, fearing that Russia could exploit tensions between them to promote destabilisation in the Balkans, in an effort to shift attention from its aggression in Ukraine.
Currently, the parties have on the table an EU proposal for normalising relations, which the US has voiced support for.
Dialogue players, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, and Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, are expected to meet in Brussels on February 27th, for the first time since November last year.
