US President Joe Biden said he expects to speak to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, about what Washington says was the Chinese spy balloon that American aircraft crashed earlier this month as it passed over the US.
“We are not close to a new Cold War”, Biden said on February 16th.
Biden, who talked about Chinese balloons and three unidentified flying objects that were crashed by American aircraft, did not say when he will talk to President Xi, but he said the United States is continuing diplomatic engagement with China on the issue.
I expect to speak with President Xi, and I hope that we will go to this case to the end. But I do not apologize for the collapse of the” balloon, Biden said when he spoke about the controversy expressed by Beijing.
China has said that 60m balloons were monitoring weather conditions, but Washington has argued that balloons were watching and that there were electronic devices.
Beden, who has made only a few public comments about flying objects that were detected from Chinese balloons, broke the silence after lawmakers requested more information about the incident that has disturbed many Americans.
He said the American intelligence community is still trying to understand more about three other unidentified flying objects. One fell on Alaska, the other on Canada, and the third object collapsed on Lake Huron.
“We still do not know exactly what these three objects were, but so far it has not been suggested that they were related to the Chinese spying program through balloons, or that they were surveillance machines from any other state”, he said.
Biden said the objects were likely detected for the fact that radar surveillance has increased in response to the Chinese balloon incident. He said his team is working for new parameters or when missiles should be launched towards such facilities.
The American intelligence community believes the three objects were “most likely balloons linked to private companies, resolution or research institutes”, Biden said.
