Opposition protests demanding election annulment in Serbia have been coupled with violent clashes.
For the seventh consecutive day, Serbia against violence “, the main opposition group, had staged an antigovernmental protest to denounce alleged fraud in the December 17th elections.
Against violent demonstrators who have long targeted the hailing municipality of eggs, plastic bottles, tomatoes and other items, police used tear gas in an effort to disperse riot groups. Some entry doors and some windows were destroyed. Finally, police forces managed to establish a cordon of officers around the municipality, pushing demonstrators back to the side roads and to Slavija Square.
As President Aleksandar Vucic announced in the evening, who called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, at least 35 violent demonstrators were arrested on charges of attempting to attack institutions.
According to outgoing Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic, what happened Sunday evening in Belgrade could be compared to the 2014 Maidan uprising in Kiev, which began with the early 2014 antigovernmental protests in the central square of the Ukrainian capital.
For Mayor Sapic, those Sunday evening in Belgrade were exceptional events of extreme gravity, targeting the violent attack on institutional offices. President Vucic, in turn, warned the institutions' harsh response to those who think and practice violent behavior.
