Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, has said that with the decision to allow free movement of Kosovo license vehicles with Kosovo license plates, RKS, through Serbia, his government has avoided “gravelocks and major risks” for the country.
Vuciq said that his government's decision, which will enter into force on January 1st, will benefit the Serbian people and Serbia as a whole.
Our “interest is the Open Balkans and freedom of movement, which also applies to vehicles. I think that this decision will benefit the Serbian people and Serbia as a whole. With this and some other things we have avoided traps and major risks for Serbia”, Vuciq told TV Prva on December 30th.
On December 25th, the government of Serbia announced it made a decision to enable free movement of all vehicles from Kosovo to the territory of Serbia from next month.
It is not clear if car plates will no longer be covered with sticky paper when they cross the border as it currently does.
For such a thing, Serbia had agreed to the 2011 agreement reached between Kosovo and Serbia representatives in the dialogue mediated by the European Union.
Earlier this week, Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi said that the Serbian Government's decision on RKS plates was an indication that “all destabilisions” that Serbia has made in connection with over the years were “unreasonable and unnecessary”.
