The Guardian: Tony Blair was advised to work with the KLA, worried he was looking close to them.

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair was advised to work with the Kosovo Liberation Army in wartime in Kosovo. The prestigious media wrote that they did not believe them [ KLA] were much better than Serbs. But despite the former British prime minister's major concerns it seemed to be too much [...]

But despite the former British prime minister's major concerns that he seemed very close to the KLA, Blair demanded that he end crimes against humanity, writes The Guardian.

In general, our starting point in a conflict like this should be that your enemy's enemy is your friend”, says the advice which is to Blair for the war in Kosovo, according to National Archives documents.

We're at risk of being too ungrateful. We don't want to favour U politically CK to other Kosovo parties. But we have to calculate that the KLA is becoming much more popular after what happened [in Yugoslav wars] and to admit that they are the only party with a kind of army”, said in a letter prepared by John Savers, as well as the adviser for Blair's foreign affairs and later chief of the Secret Intelligence Service.

In the letter, Blair and his top aides, Sabers estimates it would be impossible to disarm the KLA after the conflict. Instead, he advised, it would be better to work with the organization to declare elections.

At the end of the letter, issued in the National Archive by the Office of the Cabinet on Friday, a hand “anonym” wrote: “I agree to”.

The note makes clear the anxiety about the nature and involvement of Great Britain in the brutal multi-fracial conflict that erupted in the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001.

NATO's interventions included air strikes against Milosevic forces, who died in 2006 while being tried for war crimes.

Great Britain, under Blair's leadership, would then become one of the KLA's top supporters under its then leader, Hashim Thaci.

In April of this year, Thaci appeared at the Hague tribunal's dock of indictees along with three other KLA leaders, Kadri Veselini, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, indicted for war crimes that include alleged co-operation in killing 102 people.

Blair's team has declined to comment on the documents of the National Archives.
