Lawyer for Hope: Bajram Kelmendi, from prisoner to advocate human rights
There are symbols born in the calamities of his people that motivate generations to protect freedom. There are men who inspire a people. There are lawyers whose memory shapes and participates in the democratic foundations of a nation. I want to share with you the extraordinary history of Bajram Kelmendi, a man who devoted his life to protecting the rights and freedoms of others, despite his personal trials and sacrifices.
Bajram Kelmendi was born in a troubled world, where freedom and justice were often set aside. With this injustice he faced childhood, when at the age of eight he and his family were imprisoned for political reasons by the Yugoslav regime. Despite these difficult circumstances, he never lost confidence in justice and the individual's ability to make a difference.
In high school, at the age of 20, Bajrami is arrested for his political activity and sent to prison. There he discovered his vocalization and decided to dedicate his life to protecting human rights. As philosopher Albert Camus said, “in the middle of the winter, I discovered within me an indestructible summer”. That's what happened in Bayram's life.
The injustices the people of Kosovo were experiencing and their series of imprisonment were undoubtedly the foundation of their motivation to protect human rights and become a criminal lawyer. He dealt with the most difficult cases, representing political defendants and joining other lawyers to investigate crimes committed by Yugoslavia against the Albanian population.
His clients described him as a king in the courtroom, a determined and committed lawyer to secure justice for them. They also viewed him as a source of hope, for he believed in the cause he protected and never surrendered. He has represented politicians, journalists, students, professors, miners and so on.
Bajram Kelmendi was a man of culture and wisdom. He knew the lyrics of the “Jeva” of Omar Khayyam and “Malthia tree” by Gjergj Fish. The passion for literature, poetry, and music reflected the depth of his soul.
