According to police information, over 4,000 fans gathered in front of the National Stadium in Sofia, protesting with a loud voice against Bulgarian Football Federation President Borislav Mikhailov.
After fans threw smoke bombs, stones, and beer bottles at the police, violent clashes broke out. Police have been countering with water cannons.
“24 injured persons were examined, including seven who were taken to the hospital with head injuries, legs and broken arms and many of them sprayed with pepper”, a spokesperson for the AFP emergency centre said.
Some of the police officers “are seriously injured and are in hospital”, Stefan Ivanov, deputy head of the Sofia Police Department, said at a news conference.
