“Thanks to Poland for the important decision to send 60 tanks to Ukraine, 30 of which are the famous PT-91 Twardy, along with 14 Leoparde”, Zelensky wrote on Twitter on January 27th.
As it became known earlier this week, Ukraine has also been promised war tanks from Germany and the United States of America.
Polish Prime Minister Matthewsz Morawiecki announced the delivery of tanks on January 26th, in an interview for Canadian TV News.
We are currently ready to send 60 of our modernised tanks, 30 of which are PT-91. Meanwhile, at the top of that, 14 Leopard 2” tanks, he said.
He added that Poland, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, “has sent 250 tanks... or even more”.
The tanks Poland has already sent are mostly of the Soviet model T-72, compared to which, the model PT-91 is a modernised version.
After weeks of diplomatic debate, the US and Germany announced, on January 25th, their heavy Abrams and Leopard tanks to Ukraine. This step is seen as a breakthrough in efforts to support war-torn Ukraine.
Germany also allowed other countries to send German-made Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
Ukrainian military commanders said the weapons would help counteroffensives and reduce the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed in the war.
The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls war a <x0 military special operation” for the demilitarisation of Ukraine.
The West responded to Russia with severe sanctions.
As a result of the war in Ukraine, thousands of people have died, while millions of others have been displaced from their homes.
