These statements were made after a visit to a western Ukrainian region, where they discussed border protection, amid speculation about the potential for a Russian offensive through Belarus.
Britain's Defence Ministry in recent intelligence updates has analysed the announcement of joint air exercises between Russia and Belarus, to be held in the second part of January and has downplayed the importance of the new presence of Russian Army helicopters near Minsk.
Addressing continued fears regarding the spread of the war in Ukraine, British intelligence said that the new disposal of Russian aircraft in Belarus, located on the Ukrainian border, “likely to be real for exercise, rather than preparation for any new offensive against Ukraine”.
Russia has used Belarus's territory to begin the invasion of Ukraine, even though the Austrian authoritarian leader, Alyaxander Lucashenka, has attempted to downplay his country's role in conflict.
The commander of Kiev's defence forces, Lieutenant General Olexia Pavlyuk, said on January 10th that the Ukrainian Army is strengthening its defence positions in the north, and the town is preparing for a possible offensive from the Belarus border. / REL
