Gerasimov replaces Sergei Surovici, who was appointed to the post on October 8th. He was the first official to be appointed commander of all Russian forces in Ukrainian territory since February.
Within a few days after Surovici took office to oversee the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Moscow began striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
He was also at the helm when Russian forces withdrew from the southern regional capital of Herson in November last year.

The other two deputies are Army General Oleg Saliukov, who will serve as ground forces commander and Colonel General Alexei Kim, deputy chief of the General Staff.
Russian forces are currently engaged in intensive battles around the town of Soledar in eastern Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Ministry said earlier that Russian forces, including those of the Vagner mercenary group, have suffered a huge “loss of” in an attempt to invade Soledar. / REL/
