They believe an offensive will be more successful after US weapons and training are supplied, writes Skynews.
A senior Biden administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said talks with Ukraine on a counteroffensive have been in the context of security that Ukrainians initially devote enough time to training on the latest weapons provided by the US.
Early this week, America announced it would send hundreds of armoured vehicles to Ukraine as part of a $2.5 billion arms package.
American officials believe Ukraine should leave the line with Russia round to round with artillery fires, as Moscow will eventually gain advantage through decay, and instead will focus on using modern Western weapons.
However, the US has signalled that it will not send tanks “Abrams” to Ukraine, as they are expensive and difficult to maintain.
