China has territorial claims against Taiwan, the island that governs itself, and claims it will once return its control, even through force.
The Vatican constitutes the last European government to have diplomatic ties with Taiwan instead of Beijing, although the United States and other Western nations hold informal reports.
Tsai, in a letter initiated by the head of the Holy See, has expressed its support for the Vatican's position in the Russian war in Ukraine for “selectors friendly to migration” and public health.
“We identify with your positions”, Tsai wrote.
Taiwan and China were divided in 1949 after a civil war and have no formal relations, but they link billions of dollars of trade and investment.
Tsai was also referred to in her letter to the Pope's statement, made days ago, that the “the warvirus” must be healed.
“Armed war is not absolutely option”, Tsai wrote.
China has increased pressure on Taiwan, including launching missiles at sea, after former House of Representatives leader in the United States Nancy Pelosi, and several other American officials have paid an official visit to Taiwan in August last year.
Meanwhile, British officials and other Western states have also visited this island. /rel/
