Ana Montes, 65, considered one of the most prominent spies of the Cold War was released after more than 20 years in prison.
She spied on Cuba for more than two decades while working as an analyst at the US Defense Intelligence Agency.
After her arrest in 2001, Washington said she had discovered Havana almost all American intelligence operations on the island, and for that reason was considered one of the most harmful “spidies” for American security.
Anna Montes was accused of discovering the identity of four American spies and had exposed entire classified materials. The judge who sentenced her to 25 years in prison said she had put the whole nation at risk.
But unlike other spies who differ for personal gain, Anna Montes was spying on Cuba because of her ideology. She had agreed to work for Cuban intelligence after opposing Reagan Presidency policies in Latin America.
