They were left stuck in their cars because the snow caught the release of a tunnel southeast of the town of Nyingchi on Tuesday evening.
Local rescuers said the “avalanche caused powerful winds”. There's no known number of people stuck.
Only 53 survivors have been found, five of whom with serious injuries, according to the Global Times, citing a local official.
State news agency “Xinhua” reported that local authorities sent 1,348 rescue-seekers and 236 means to pave the 75km route, reports the BBC, records Kankosova.tv.
The Orthek covered the highway linking the town of Pai in Mainling County and Medog County in Tibet, China's main Busd region west.
The Himalayan Mountains have an altitude of nearly 4,500m and are often hit by avalanches.
