In a new BBC network documentary, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Russian President Vladimir Putin had threatened Britain with a missile attack. Mr. Johnson says phone conversations took place on the eve of aggression in Ukraine from Moscow in February of last year.
Mr. Johnson recalls the Russian leader saying: “would only take a minute... and happy “.
Mr. Johnson, however, said he did not take the threat seriously in their <x0 extraordinary” call. The “was just in the course of the conversation where I was trying to convince him to negotiate,” said Mr. Johnson to President Putin.
“is a lie,” a Kremlin spokesman told reporters about the interpretation of phone conversations by Mr. Johnson. “There were no missile threats”
Former Prime Minister Johnson also told the BBC that he tried to convince Mr. Putin not to start a war, telling him Ukraine would not join NATO in a predictable “future”. Mr Johnson also said he told Russian leaders that an invasion of Ukraine would lead to Western sanctions.
Mr. Johnson, who resigned last year after a series of scandals, tried to position London as Ukraine's main ally in the West.
While on duty, he visited Kiev several times and often called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. / VOA
