Hungary will not support Kosovo's membership in European Union mechanisms until Kosovo and Serbia normalise their relations through a comprehensive agreement.
So at least it has declared Hungary's Foreign Minister, Peter Szijarto, at a joint news conference with his Serbian counterpart, Ivica Dacic.
“As far as Kosovo is concerned, we are also interested in reaching a dialogue-based solution. Therefore, we accepted KFOR leadership because we believed that in this way we could contribute to security and peace. If specific European formations would accept Kosovo in Europe before reaching an agreement, it would risk reaching a Kosovo-Serbia agreement, and for that reason Hungary would vote against Kosovo's membership in European bodies”, the Hungarian diplomatic chief has declared.
In addition to Hungary, the Spanish government had stated weeks earlier that it would not support Kosovo's candidacy for EU membership.
“Spain does not recognise Kosovo, so it will vote against any procedural decision and granting Kosovo candidate status”, EU Secretary of State in Spain Pascal Navarro had said during his presentation before the EU Mixed Commission, held in the Senate.
In December, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti had physically submitted the document on EU membership application, the Czech Presidency.
