The explosion occurred when the mosque was filled with believers and more than 150 people were injured.
Part of the building was destroyed, and officials say there are people buried in the ruin. Many more are being sent to local hospitals, reports the BBC.
The cause of the explosion remains unclear. Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif has said he strongly condemns this attack.
In a statement, Mr. Sharif said those behind the “incident had nothing to do with Islam”.
He added: “The whole nation is united against the threat of terrorism”.
The blast occurred during afternoon prayers in the northwest city, near the border with the neighbouring state of Afghanistan.

In the capital, Islamabad police issued a high security alert and said security at all the city's entry and exit points had increased.
