His administration has previously been reluctant to send vehicles, but American officials told reporters Tuesday that they are expected to send 30 tanks, although they warned they were still working on details, the BBC reported on Wednesday.
Tanks are unlikely to arrive very soon and are not about short-term fighting, officials said.
The US has avoided sending its own vehicles “M1 Abrams” the country's most advanced tanks, due to concerns about how Ukraine will maintain high-tech vehicles, which require considerable training to operate.
The decision comes after a NATO defence meeting last week, during which Germany reportedly voiced reluctance to provide its tanks “Leopard 2”, unless the U.S. agreed to send M1 tanks.
But on Wednesday, Germany has decided to approve delivery of tanks “Leopard 2” in Ukraine, a decision that has provoked Russia's wrath.
