When Slobodan Milosevic's nationalist Serbian regime forced them away from schools and universities, Kosovo Albanians continued their schooling through improvised homes, such as residences, attics and basements.
The spontaneous reaction of ethnic exclusion very soon evolved into a nationwide educational system that would last for most of the decade.
Former school-house students Linda Gusia and Drita Halimi related this part of the Kosovo Albanian history of BBC journalist Jack Butcher.
