So said police chief Steve Drew at a news conference, reports the BBC.
The shooting occurred shortly after 2: 00 p.m. by local time at this elementary school, and it is still unclear how the child took the gun, but Drew said there were no random “accidental shots”.
The teacher, whose name is not known, is said to be in her 30s and has suffered serious injuries.
The event took place in a first grade class.
Officials said that while the school, which has about 550 students, had metal detection equipment, students were accidentally searched but not every child was checked.
Police did not show the kind of weapon used in the incident, but said the boy had used a gun. / REL
