President Macky Sal has written on Twitter that the crash occurred in the village of Gniby, in the Kaffrine region, about 3:30 in the morning.
He declared three days of mourning, beginning today, and has announced that he will hold an interministerial council to discuss road safety measures.
At least 78 people have been injured -- some in serious condition -- has declared public prosecution. The images of the crash showed that the damaged buses ran into each other.
