For five years, 25 thousand Kosovars gave up citizenship

About 4 thousand and 700 Kosovars have relinquished citizenship during 2022. This number is a little lower than a year early. From the Ministry of Internal Affairs say the main reason for freedom from citizenship is the failure of two citizenships in different states, mainly of the EU, where they migrated [...]

Kosovars' demands for freedom of citizenship have continued during 2022. According to Interior Affairs Ministry data from January 1st to December 19th, the number of those who have renounced Kosovo citizenship is slightly lower than that of the same period in 2021. MPB spokeswoman Nora Feoshi tells Radio Kosovo the number of citizens who for various reasons gave up their citizenship.

“Since January 1st until December 19th, 2022 of Kosovo's citizenship, 4 thousand and 708 persons --” have been released, Fethos says of the Kosovo radio. Their subx2> are 2,000 and 346 male and 2 thousand 362 female” According to her, during the same period during the year 2021, 4 thousand and 787 persons have been released from citizenship.

spokeswoman Fetoosti explains the main reasons why it prompts Kosovars to give up their citizenship. Persistent

“Arsyet why people give up the citizenship of the Republic of Kosovo is because many European Union states do not allow two citizenships, including some states that are not part of the EU”, Fethoshi says.

The “given that a large number of our citizens have been living for years in these states and a large number have even been born in these countries, and as a result, they have acquired the right to grant citizenship and are obliged to be released from previous citizenship if they want to gain citizenship of that country”.

It explains that the main reason is the ban on maintaining two citizenships from many countries.

During 2022, there has also been a considerable number of citizens who have gained Kosovo citizenship, Fetos says.

“Over the period from 1 January to so far the citizenship of the Republic of Kosovo has won 574 persons”, the MPB spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, according to MPB data, from 2017 to late 2021, about 25 thousand people have given up Kosovo citizenship.
