Russian financing: What charges were made to Basha by the Socialist Party five years ago

Russia has spent more than $300m since 2014 to try to influence politicians and other officials in more than two dozen countries, the US State Department claims in a recently published cable.

According to a source of knowledge on the American intelligence report, Albania is one of those countries.

In Albania, Russia granted about half a million dollars to the Democratic Party in 2017 through ghost companies”, the American government's source said.

But in 2017, the name of the Democratic Party and the figure mentioned of $500,000 correspond to investigations that were opened in Albania at the time against the DP based on statements that the American lobby firm Muzin Capitol Partners reported having received from the DP.

The American lobby firm had declared in 2018 in the U.S. Department of Justice that it had received a total of three payments - a total of $675 thousand - for its work in favour of the Democratic Party in 2017.

That world Socialist Party deputy, Edwin Bushati, had asked then Democratic Party Chairman Lulzim Basha to provide clarifications to justice and Albanians about his ties with the Russian company.

A company registered in the fiscal paradise, owned by two Russian businessmen, not only states a payment of another $150,000 in favour of Lulzim Basha's lobby firm, but another half-million dollar fee is envisioned in its contract, which Lulzim Basha does not deny, but refuses to point to the source of this other half million dollars”.

So, half a million dollars went to the private firm from 100 Albanians, for whom Lulzim Basha only heard that they exist, but I don't even know who they are; the other half a million, according to Lulzim Basha, the firm has received them from whom and has made them available to the Democratic Party to pay opposition propaganda against Albania in the United States of America”.

Bushat even described this incident as a criminal event that shames not only the authors but the entire political class.

This is one of those criminal and immoral events that turn politics down so far that if they remain unpunished, not only the perpetrators of the event are ashamed, but the entire political class and the very society of the state where they are located”.

It also has to show, why are they paid by the Russian company “Biniata Trade LP” $500,000 for the PD, as it appears in the latter's contract? What reason did the Russians have in question to pay Lulzim Basha? And also, Lulzim Basha must answer to the prosecutor what is that another $500,000, which he says were paid by 100 Albanians in the US? Who are these Albanians who put their money in hiding their hand, according to Lulzim Basha?

Bushat, among other things, had said Basha must show what she promised Russian entrepreneurs.

“What could have promised the opposition leader Russian entrepreneurs at the peak of the election campaign, just a few weeks from holding general elections? These answers Lulzim Basha has an obligation to give before Albanian public opinion, but also our international partners”.
