This means that Queen Elizabeth II's eldest son, Prince Charles, became king shortly after her death on September 8, 2022.
However, months or even more may pass before Charles ' official enthronement.
In Elizabeth's case, her enthronement took place on June 2, 1953, about 16 months after her accession on February 6, 1952, when her father, King George VI, died.
The formalities that happen after Charles takes the throne:
Within 24 hours of the death of a monarch, the new leader is officially declared as soon as possible by the “Membership Council” at the St. James Palace in London. This council consists of officials of the Privy Council, which includes senior cabinet ministers, judges and heads of the Church of England, who are summoned to the palace.
After that, Parliament gathers lawmakers to take their oath of allegiance to the new monarch.
The new Monarch will be sworn in before the Privy Council at the St James Palace to preserve the Church of Scotland, according to the 1707 Union Act.
The announcement of the new leader is then read publicly in St. James' Palace, as well as in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast capitals of four nations making up the United Kingdom.
Charles must declare in Parliament, on the first day of his hearing after accession, or the crown, whatever is first, that he is a loyal Protestant. The oath is mandated by the Act of the Declaration of Aedration of 1910.
He must also take a wreath vow as predicted in the 1689 Crown Vow Act, the 1701 Resolution Act and the Act of the Declaration of Adderation. / REL
