The EU welcomes implementation of the document agreement: A positive step that will facilitate freedom of movement

This agreement between the two countries has been reached under European Union mediation on 27 August.

According to her, Kosovo and Serbia have agreed to remove additional documents when citizens enter each other's territory.

“This is a positive step, which will facilitate freedom of movement and a European solution”, is said among other things in the European bloc's response.

Kosovo and Serbia have free movement agreements since 2011.

Serbia has implemented it immediately and for 11 years has left this kind of document to Kosovo citizens.

When the Kosovo government has decided to implement this point of agreement on August 1st, Serbs in northern Kosovo have raised tensions through the settlement of barricades.

The Kosovo government has then postponed implementing the decision on September 1st, but already the parties have agreed on their failure.

“Gives the right time for license plates”

On September 1st, the process of reregistering cars with license plates issued by Serbia, with Kosovo acronyms, such as KM, PZ and similar.

Pristina considers these plates illegal and has said that with the process of reregistering, citizens in the north would benefit other tax advantages, which could reach the value of 5,000 euros.

The EU has demanded that Kosovo provide sufficient time for reregistering.

The European bloc has said that Kosovo has the right to end using these plates, but has not mentioned RKS plates.

The EU's stance on the license plate issue has become clear in some cases. Under agreements reached under dialogue in 2011 and 2016 on freedom of movement, Kosovo has the right to end using KM license plates. However, it is important that sufficient time be given for the implementation of this plan and that it be prepared and applied in close consultation with the citizens it applies to, in line with good European practices”.

Diplomats in the EU believe the focus now should be on resolving the issue of license plates, implementing previously reached agreements in dialogue, and on reaching agreement on comprehensive normalisation of reports.

Dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia started 11 years ago.

More than 20 agreements have been reached in areas such as energy, telecommunications, justice, customs, freedom of movement, but not all have been implemented.

Kosovo insists that dialogue on normalising relations be closed with mutual recognition between the two countries.

Serbia, on the other hand, seeks compromise solutions. /Rel
