During his visit to the African state, Borrell stressed the need for conditions of peace and stability to ensure that there will be no threats and problems if conflicts arise in the region. At a meeting with President Philippe Nyus, Borrell stated: “We thank you for what you're doing. In a few days, the first ship of 175 thousand tons of gas will be launched by Cabo Delgado to Europe”.
Despite the call for stability, Mozambique suffers from jihadist terrorism in the province of Cabo Delgado. This country now awaits a European Union military training mission that helps the local army fight jihadism.
Mozambique has been declared neutral in the conflict in Ukraine, and despite having received great European support in the form of humanitarian and military aid, it is among the groups of countries that have abstained in voting to denounce the Russian invasion of the United Nations General Assembly.
