The UN has adopted a resolution, considered historic, against sexual attacks aimed at providing access to justice for victims of such abuse.
The vote was welcomed with ovations and applause from those present.
In the text, which was adopted by consensus, the UN General Assembly urges countries to take effective measures, within the framework of national and international law, to help victims and survivors of sexual violence gain access to justice.
This is the first time the UN has adopted an independent resolution that recognises rape in peacetime, according to Amanda Nguyen, founder of an NGO.
What we're asking people is not only to understand that rape stigma is something that needs to be removed, but to look into the mirror and ask: what you've done about this”, she said.
An exhibition at the organization's headquarters in New York titled “What were you wearing? ” remained open for days to stress that the victim's clothing should have no impact on rape investigations.
