Dressed in leather trousers and traditional bavarese, local and foreign shirts, they flocked to specially opened bars and tents to enjoy the best bavarese beer and local foods. The festivities began officially at noon, when Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter opened the first barrel of beer, followed by 12 gunshots that are the signal of other tents to open.
This is the 187th edition of the festival, which is scheduled to close on 3 October, after millions of liters of beer have been drunk. The record is held in 2014, where 7.7 million gallons [7 million L] were consumed. Usually, 6 million people attend celebrations.
