The agreement, which is expected to be officially announced in Poland on Wednesday, will enable Varshava to buy 980 tanks based on the K2 model in South Korea, 648 alone armoured K9 and 48 FA-50 fighter aircraft, the ministry said. It would not confirm the value of the agreement.
The first 180 K2 tanks, produced by Hyundai Rotem and equipped with 120mm automatic weapons, are expected to arrive this year, with the production of 800 improved tanks starting in 2026 in Poland, according to the ministry.
The first 48 K9 buses, produced by Hanwha Defense, are also expected to arrive this year, with the handover of a second group of 600 to begin in 2024. Out of 2025 these will be produced in Poland, the ministry said.
The ministry said these armoured vehicles would partially replace Soviet-era tanks Poland has donated Ukraine to use in its fight against Russia.
