Videos featuring the critical moment of the attack, as well as the suspect's immediate arrest, were published from the election rally in social media.
The cabinet spokesman said Abe was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest. This term is often used in Japan before a death is officially confirmed.
The attack on the longest-lived former Japanese prime minister in power sparked many worldwide reactions condemning the act.
